    What is a Wine Preserver?

Wine preservers are a must-have accessory for anyone who loves wine. As its name implies, a wine preserver is a tool designed to prevent wine from spoiling after it has been uncorked. Wine preservers can be as simple as a stopper inserted into the bottle's neck, replacing the cork. Another kind of wine preserver is the type used by wine dispensers; a food-safe gas such as argon keeps wine fresh for weeks. The main purpose of the wine preserver is to slow down the oxidization process so you can enjoy your wine leftovers.

What are the Types of Wine Preservers?

There are multiple types of wine preservers available.

    • Traditional Wine Stoppers: A bottle stopper is inserted into the unfinished bottle before storing the bottle in the refrigerator. Having a stopper on hand is convenient because the original cork is often hard to place back inside the bottle.
    • Decanter Ball: A decanter ball is placed on top of the decanter to prevent further oxidization.
    • Electric Wine Preserver: An electric preserver usually features a vacuum pump. It removes the air from the bottle and then seals it with a stopper.
    • Manual Pump and Stopper: A manual pump is like an electric preserver, but labor is involved. You place the wine stopper atop the bottle, then place the pump on top of the stopper to remove air from the bottle.

How Do You Store an Open Bottle of Wine?

Preserving wine leftovers is easy. First, you will need something to plug the hole in the bottle. You may reuse the cork that came with your wine, making sure to insert the same end that was previously touching the liquid. Have you lost the cork? Replace it with a wine stopper. If you have a wine preservation spray on hand, you can use it before sealing the bottle. Another method of storing opened wine is to transfer it to a container that seals, such as a mason jar or a screw cap half bottle. Cold temperatures help to prevent oxidization, so once the bottle is closed, you can store it inside your kitchen refrigerator or a wine fridge.

How Long is Wine Good Once Opened?

Now that your wine is tucked away in the refrigerator, you may wonder how long you have till it spoils. Open wine should be consumed within four days. As you drink, be sure to replace the wine’s seal. If you have let your wine sit for too long, don’t worry, it is still safe to consume. Once wine oxidizes, it becomes vinegar.
